In the world of digital currencies, having an account means you have a special set of secret codes that lets you receive assets and also send assets to others. Aleo, which cares a lot about keeping things private, has a unique setup for these accounts involving three main parts:
- Private Key: Think of it as a super-secret password created from a special phrase you get when you first set up your account. It's used to prove it's really you when you want to do something on your account.
- View Key: This is a bit special for blockchains that like to keep things extra private. It helps keep the details of money you're sending or receiving secret.
- Address: This is like your home address but for receiving digital money. When someone needs to send you something, you give them this address.
Each of these parts is made from the one before it. If you're curious to know more, you can read up on it in the Aleo accounts docs.
Creating a New Account, Step-By-Step
Once you're all set up with a wallet and have your special phrase, a default account pops up in your Leo Wallet. This account, and any others you create, all come from that special phrase and can be brought back with it if needed.
Here’s how to make or bring back an account:
- Open your Leo Wallet.
- Click on the current account name at the top left of the Home panel.
- Select "Create or Restore an Account".
- Type in a name for the account (this doesn't affect your account's setup).
What Does Importing an Account Mean?
You can also add an account to your wallet using its Private Key or View Key directly, without using your special phrase. But remember, these accounts won't come back automatically with your special phrase later; you'll need to add them again.
If you use the view key to add an account, you can see what transactions it has made and what it holds, but you can't make transactions yourself.
How to Add an Account with Its Private Key
- Open the wallet.
- Click on the current account name at the top left of the Home panel.
- Choose "Import Account."
- Go to the "Private Key" section.
- Type in the Private Key.
- Click "Import Account" to finish.
Adding an account with its private key, however, gives you full access to use all the features of the Leo wallet for that account.
How to Add an Account with Its View Key
This feature is only available in Desktop Version.

- Click "Import Account" to finish.
How to Check Your Account's Keys
The Leo Wallet allows you to look up any of your account's keys whenever you need to. But remember, your View Key and Private Key are like the keys to your safe; keep them secret to protect your money.
